When two people are trying to call each other at different times, but they both keep missing each other's calls. For example, person A calls person B, but person B does not pick up. Then an hour later, person B calls person A, and person A does not pick up. That would be an example of phone tag.
Example: Sorry I missed your call. We're playing phone tag, so let's just save time by scheduling a time over email that works for both of us.
