Definition of Off-Cycle Promotion

When an employee is promoted at a different time in the year than the usual time period when employees are given promotions. For example, if an employee is promoted in June, but employees are typically promoted in January, then that would be an off-cycle promotion.

Example: The employee launched a big project that turned out to be successful. The company's management rewarded the employee by giving him an off-cycle promotion.
