Definition of Dotted Line Reporting

A type of business reporting in which an employee reports to more than one manager. This reporting structure is often used in matrix organizations.

Example: The employee reported to five different managers because the company used a dotted line reporting structure. The employee had to spend a lot of time reporting on the status of various projects, rather than making progress on those projects because they had so many managers.
